Target heeds pleas to stop the 'Christmas creep,' focusing on Thanksgiving

Target officials want the company to focus on Thanksgiving before Christmas.

So the retail giant says it's taking a step back on Christmas promotion in the store and allowing Thanksgiving to take the spotlight when shoppers first enter its locations.

Last month, Target officials said the retailer would hire more than 100,000 temporary workers, a sharp increase over past year. Its holiday plans also include a new e-gift service, adding kiosks focusing on low-priced impulse presents in its outlets and launching a wallet feature to its app.

Target, which has promised about 1,700 holiday products including "Star Wars", LEGO and Netflix merchandise and hundreds of $1 stocking stuffers, said it would offer promotional deals during weekends for the last two months of the year.

Several industry surveys have indicated that shoppers will spend more on holiday gifting this year, helped by higher online sales and a strong labor market.

Shoppers will see Thanksgiving signs and displays in stores and ads will focus on the big dinner prep and entertaining, The Associated Press reported.

As it eases into the later holidays, the company isn't repeating the "Ten Days of Deals" strategy, which it had for two seasons in a row.

Target's also focusing on convenience. Instead, it's increasing weekend deals starting November 11. That lets the recipient know, and the person can change the color or size or choose something entirely different - all before anything is shipped. They include items like fluffy slippers or beauty products. It plans to double that figure next year.
