The court has been hearing various cases related to issues related to Aadhaar.

The court had agreed to constitute a five-judge bench to examine the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar scheme after a nine-judge constitution bench, on August 24, declared the right to privacy a fundamental right. Venugopal said that he would come back and respond to the clarification sought by the court on Monday. This process was initiated by the Centre on July 31, to assuage fears that individual data in possession of the government through Aadhar stands to be exposed if it is mandated that Aadhaar be linked to various programmes and services.

Venugopal informed the bench that taking into account Justice Chandrachud's suggestion, made in his privacy judgement, a government-appointed expert committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice BN Srikrishna was already working towards a robust data protection regime. We want to genuinely protect the interest of the public.

The Supreme Court will hear Mamata Banerjee government's plea challenging the Centre's move to make Aadhaar card mandatory to avail social welfare schemes on October 30.
