Tampa Bay Rays' Gabe Kapler warms up before facing the Colorado Rockies in the first inning of an interleague baseball game in Denver on Wednesday

Kapler, 42, has managed before - he served as a minor-league skipper during his one-year retirement in 2007. It is not a surprise that the Phillies hired an outsider. He has been labeled as a budding managing prospect for the last couple of years. They won't announce the move until after the World Series ends.

There were known to be three major candidates for the Phillies manager job.

Kapler has a keen interest in sabermetrics and nutrition, and while running the Dodgers' farm system upset a few players by going to all organic food.

Los Angeles Dodgers executive Gabe Kapler could celebrate twice this week. He also wrote two years ago about the idea of building a winning culture. The team went 58-81 under Kapler, and he resumed his playing career the following season. After Friedman left the Dodgers to join the Rays, he was able to bring the Southern California native into his front office. According to sources, Kapler wowed club officials with his energy and intellect during the interview process. He was also the coach for Team Israel in the 2012 World Baseball Classic.

"Gabe has a tremendous mind, a thirst for knowledge and he's a great leader of people", Friedman told ESPN.com at the time.

Minor-league manager Dusty Wathan was thought to be the other main candidate for the gig. Analytics is not the only area where the Phillies are seeking to develop competitive advantages. That started with ownership's hiring of Andy MacPhail as club president in June 2015 and Matt Klentak as general manager in October 2015. We see our roster right now is littered with young players who look to have a very, very bright future.

With the Phillies, Kapler will have his work cut out for him.
