Amazon to unveil 'Lord of the Rings' TV show

Lord of the Rings

Lord of the Rings

Earlier this month it was reported that Amazon was in talks with Warner Bros.

For everybody who has felt deprived over the years because the last instalment of The Lord of the Rings franchise came out nearly five years ago, Amazon has some really brilliant news.

Amazon is planning a "Lord of the Rings" TV series, but although J.R.R. Tolkien fans are probably rejoicing, it could be a risk for the corporate goliath.

"The Lord of the Rings is a cultural phenomenon that has captured the imagination of generations of fans through literature and the big screen". The move is made more intense by the fact that no creative choices on the show have been made yet, save that it will be a prequel series taking place before the first LOTR film, The Fellowship of the Ring.

The streaming service company, in a statement, said it signed a multiple season commitment and the deal includes a potential for spin-off series as well. It's important to note that it won't follow the events of the Lords of the Rings, but rather it is based on J.R.R. Tolkien's work and will feature original stories from that universe.

Amazon is no stranger to big spending on film and TV.

Lord of the Rings is huge, yet people we left feeling a little bit cheated after Peter Jackson's subpar Hobbit trilogy. And what better way to pursue that goal than to bring back a franchise whose movies starring Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom grossed $6 billion worldwide? Apart from the obvious significant details, Deadline reports that the Tolkien estate also approached Netflix and HBO, and that Amazon ended up paying close to $250 million to land the project.
