Antibiotic apocalypse~II

We remind our Nation's medical professionals, veterinarians, and researchers to learn about the appropriate prescribing and use of antibiotics, and remind them of their role in helping patients use antibiotics appropriately so that we can better combat this emerging health concern.

Mark Gilchrist, consultant pharmacist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust said: "Antibiotics are a precious resource, the effectiveness of which is under threat from increasing bacterial resistance, creating one of the most significant threats to global patient safety".

"A lot of times people come in expecting physicians in here to prescribe antibiotics for their cold symptoms", says Nguyen.

The new recommendations made in the guidelines issued by the World Health Organization are expected to help preserve the effectiveness of antibiotics that are important for human medicine by decreasing their excessive use in animals.

World Antibiotic Awareness Week is being observed from November 13 to 19, under the theme "Antibiotic, the End of an Era". The programme drives the responsible use of antimicrobials, and is aligned to the National Department of Health's (DoH) AMR National Strategy Framework 2014-2024 in response to the World Health Assembly's endorsement of a global action plan to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), "U.S". As bacteria develops resistance to medicines, it threatens our ability to treat common infectious diseases, resulting in prolonged illness, disability, and death.

For example, antibiotic-resistant gonorrhoea has now become nothing short of a major health crisis. Also, you may be giving the person the wrong drug, or a drug that they may be allergic to, and allergic reactions to drugs can be severe, or even fatal. Consumers are also driving the demand for meat raised without routine use of antibiotics, with some major food chains adopting "antibiotic-free" policies for their meat supplies. In addition, it was found that while resistance to some antibiotics has decreased in animals, resistance to other antibiotics has increased. The latest official Government figures showed sales of antibiotics for use in food-producing animals dropped by 27% between 2014 and 2016, falling to their lowest level since records began in 1993. Throughout the European Union, antibiotic usage for growth promotion purposes has been forbidden since 2006 and some even banned the preventive use of antibiotics. People can hand in their unused or out of date antibiotics at any of the Trust's Lloyds outpatient pharmacies based at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith and Hammersmith Hospital in Acton, until Wednesday 1 December.
