Jerry Jones Isn't Backing Down from the NFL, Goodell

Several fellow owners of National Football League teams have given Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones a cease-and-desist warning, threatening to punish him over his efforts to block a contract extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell, according to several people with knowledge of the situation.

In addition to the cease-and-desist warning, some owners are reportedly discussing a nuclear option - the long-shot possibility of making Jones forfeit his ownership in the Cowboys.

"I've had discussions with the committee chairman, but received no "notices", Jones said during his weekly appearance on CBS Sports Radio's 105.3 The Fan in Dallas.

One wonders why Jones' opposition to Goodell's contract, whatever the reason for the opposition, should be a big deal?

Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, chairman of the committee, said negotiations are progressing.

Jones has been critical of the National Football League and Goodell since the reinstatement of Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott's six-game suspension, but Jones said Friday on 105.3 The Fan (h/t Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News) that it wasn't the reason he was fighting Goodell's extension.

Jones claimed Tuesday he just wants the compensation committee to bring any negotiations with Goodell to the rest of the owners for approval. "He has 18 months left on there". Jones says there's plenty of time to talk about a new contract, but he'd rather focus on other bigger issues in the league first.

Elliott was originally suspended by the NFL on August 11 for violating the league's personal conduct policy over domestic violence allegations dating back to 2016. "We've got all the time in the world to evaluate what we're doing, and all the time in the world to extend him". Jones has denied this, even though he has been extremely critical of the league's punishment after Elliott was accused of domestic violence by an ex-girlfriend. "We do not intend to publicly comment on our discussions".
