"Postal elves" have been working double time, sorting packages that came in the night before, getting them ready for the carriers to take to the streets.

The postal service expects to deliver 850 million packages this holiday season - up 10% from a year ago.

"This year we're expecting about 850 million packages to go through our system nationwide". It is important to obtain and use tracking numbers once your package has shipped.

There are only 10 more days until Christmas, but you have even less time to get a letter or package to the mainland in time for the holidays. During the two week stretch leading into Christmas, the Postal Service expects to deliver almost 200 million packages per week.

While post offices are usually closed on Sunday, some major post offices around the country will be open on Sunday, December 17, 2017, to help those sending cards and packages before Christmas.

- USPS Hold Mail Service: You can notify your Post Office to hold your mail until you return up to 30 days in advance or as early as the next scheduled delivery day.

Today is the deadline for Military Priority and First Class mail.

Holiday shipping is in full swing which means post offices are busy helping you send gifts. This can be done by using Priority Mail Express.

The USPS says between Thanksgiving and New Years Day they will deliver 15 billion pieces of mail to 156 million addresses in the United States.
