Amid Saudi War, Suspected Cholera Cases in Yemen Hit 1 Million

Suspected cholera cases in Yemen have reached one million, highlighting the suffering of the country caught up in a civil war for almost three years, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said Thursday.

Noting that starvation has spread throughout the country, the International Organization for Migration said an estimated 7.3 million people, including 2.4 million children under five were in need of urgent life-saving food assistance.

Cholera flared up in April and spread rapidly, killing 2,227 people.

The war between forces loyal to President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi, who is backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and the rebel Houthi movement has killed more than 8,670 people since March 2015. The death rate has fallen dramatically and, without laboratory confirmation, recent cases are probably diarrhoea, Mr Poncin said.

"Today, the number of suspected cholera cases in Yemen since late April 2017 has just passed one million", World Health Organization spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said in a press conference in the United Nations at Geneva.

The cholera outbreak has wiped out the wreckage of what once the Yemeni healthcare system.

Also the latest medical emergency in Yemen is diphtheria, a disease not seen in the country for 25 years, which has so far affected 312 people and killed 35, Poncin added.

The US calls on Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to stop arming and enabling the Houthis' violent actions against Yemen's neighbours, including Saudi Arabia, she said.

On Wednesday, despite a fresh missile attack on Riyadh, Saudi Arabia said it would allow the port of Hodeidah, vital for aid, to stay open for a month.

Yemen has been under air and ground attack by Saudi Arabia and its allies since March 2015, a conflict that has so far killed more than 10,000 people, more than half of them are civilians, according to worldwide aid agencies.

Ships and planes carrying humanitarian supplies have been unable to reach Yemen since the Saudi-led coalition imposed a blockade early last month.
