Amtrak engineer in Washington state train crash was not using cellphone

The engineer of the Amtrak train that derailed south of Tacoma, Washington, Monday made a comment about "over speed condition" six seconds before the train derailed, according to details released by the National Transportation Safety Board Friday.

"There's a possibility, although I think it is very remote that there might have been some mechanical reason the train was going too fast".

The train's speed and the posted speed limit are likely to be key points for federal accident investigators, who are trying to determine why the train - on its inaugural run - flew off the track, sending several rail cars off a bridge overpass and onto a traffic-clogged interstate at 7:34 a.m. Monday. Investigators are still examining the cause of the crash but say the train was traveling 80 miles per hour when it entered a curve that has a speed limit of 30 miles per hour.

The review looked at the event data recorder and the inward- and outward-facing cameras on the Amtrak Cascades passenger train 501 after it derailed. The crew was not observed using personal electronic devices at the time of the crash.

This recording ended when the train was tilting, and as the crew braced for impact, the NTSB added.

The Amtrak train derailment on December 18 occurred close to where the new Cascades route reconnects to the original route.

The NTSB said the engineer's actions were "consistent with the application of the locomotive's brakes just before the recording ended". How many pounds of pressure?

The investigation of the crash, which killed three people and injured dozens, is expected to last 1 to 2 years, the NTSB said.

The other person inside the cab when the crash happened was in-training conductor who was familiarizing himself with the route.
