CFL clears way for Johnny Manziel to sign

According to a statement released by CFL commissioner Randy Ambroise, the league thoroughly vetted the 2012 Heisman victor who was once charged with misdemeanor assault involving his ex-girlfriend.

Manziel worked out with the CFL's Hamilton Tiger-Cats during the summer, but the league had to approve him before he could sign with a franchise.

The Tiger-Cats now hold Manziel's rights but have not offered him a contract.

In two season in Cleveland, Manziel started in 8 games, throwing for 1,675 yards, 7 touchdowns, 7 interceptions, along with rushing for 259 yards and a touchdown. Mr. Manziel has been informed he must continue to meet a number of conditions in order to remain eligible.

The CFL announced Thursday it would approve a contract for Manziel should it be negotiated with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who hold the quarterback's rights.

"After an extensive process of due diligence and an in-person meeting with Mr. Manziel, the Commissioner has decided that he will not register any contract for Mr. Manziel for this season".

Manziel was drafted in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns with the No. 22 overall pick. In January 2016, he had misdemeanour domestic abuse charges (involving his former girlfriend) dismissed, as long as he completed an anger management program, attended a domestic violence impact panel and participated in a substance-abuse program.

The Tiger-Cats n hadn't made him a contract offer when Manziel forced the issue by activating a 10-day CFL window in which Hamilton had to decide whether to sign, trade or release him. Hamilton started last season 0-8, but finished 6-12 with former OR and Ole Miss quarterback Jeremiah Masoli running Jones' offense. After ruling Manziel ineligible for the 2017 season, the league announced that Hamilton would hold his rights until November 30 before extending it again into January.

Manziel met with Ambrosie and was told he would have to fulfil certain requirements to be eligible to sign in the CFL. "The process that led to this decision does, however, will continue".

"I think he'd be the best player to ever play up here", Jones said recently on the CFL's official podcast.
