Cold Thursday with an even colder weather pattern to follow

Many folks in Mid-Michigan are starting below zero this morning, and where the wind is blowing, we're seeing a chill. Plenty of chilly sunshine expected Thursday.

There could be some light wintry mix in the form of a rain/freezing rain mix as far south as I-20 on New Year's Eve but the better chance remains in north Mississippi. A little improvement on the temperature front today with highs breaking into the 20s! Yet another disturbance will cut through the Midwest Friday night into Saturday as a low is exiting the Southeast Coast of the United States. In addition, snow could accompany this front Saturday into Sunday. Accumulations are possible too.

When it comes to blistering cold temperatures and wind chills, be smart. This is a minor system with low impact, however, we could pick up a couple of inches of snow. 2018 starts frigid, and the well below average temperatures continue.

"People will really need to bundle up if they are heading out Sunday night for New Year's Eve celebrations in places like Chicago, for example, where the high will be 15 F on Sunday, around 15 degrees below normal", he warned.

New Year's Day morning.

Temperatures through the day will be rising from the single digits this morning to the teens this afternoon.

Not that it will be warm on Thursday, with highs only reaching the teens, which means the snow will be light and fluffy and likely cause slippery driving conditions, the National Weather Service said.
