Trump Pokes at Global Warming as Cold Snap Grips Northern US

Trump says the cold east coast ‘could use a little’ global warming

President Donald Trump poked some fun at his climate change critics while warning New Years revelers to bundle up amid record low temperatures across the eastern seaboard in a Thursday tweet.

"In the East, it could be the COLDEST New Year's Eve on record", Trump tweeted from his Mar a Lago resort in Florida, where he is on holiday vacation. "Bundle up!" the president tweeted.

"Please note rest of world will be much warmer than normal lest anyone try to claim pocket of cold in USA debunks global warming, which they will invariably and irresponsibly do", the weather reporters said.

He made a similar comment in 2011 when he tweeted, "So much for global warming" after an October snow in NY. There's also this bit of fact: 97% of climate scientists who have published papers on climate change believe not only that the globe is warming but also that the warming is very likely due to human activity.

What Trump (and Inhofe) don't seem to understand - or choose to ignore - is that "weather" and "climate" are not the same thing.

That it is cold on any given day - or week! or month! - is not indicative of much of anything about the climate and whether it is warming or not.

"Climate change will not occur evenly from place-to-place".

As President, Trump has made those views administration policy by pulling out of the Paris climate agreement, and his Environmental Protection Agency has made a series of moves that curbed the agency's focus on climate science.

In June, he announced that the United States would withdraw from the 2015 Paris Accord, which was initally agreed to by all 195 countries at the United Nations Climate Change Conference.

However, parts of Alaska and western Canada often see drastically low temperatures this time of year.
