Minnesota's Reggie Lynch faces suspension for sexual misconduct

Gopher Fans Agree with Lynch Suspension

After an investigation by the university's Office for Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action, a school panel determined that Lynch violated the school's policies on sexual misconduct and on university rules that have been "posted or publicized", during an incident in his dorm room in May 2016.

When pressed by reporters on when the athletic department department found out about the most recent allegations against Lynch and why he continued to play basketball, Coyle repeatedly cited federal and state privacy laws as the reason he could not comment specifically on this case.

And that, according to this report, is not the incident that has earned Lynch a two-and-a-half year suspension from school and ban from the campus. The SSMS would issue its own decision. Barring a win on appeal, effective January 9th, Lynch will be suspended from the university and banned from the campus and all university events until August, 2020. Thursday's finding will not take effect if Lynch requests an SSMS hearing. Last year's Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year is playing in his final year of college eligibility.

However, university athletics director Mark Coyle was at practice Thursday, which is rare and raised eyebrows within the team, according to KSTP Sports. He sat out the 2015-16 season and immediately became the Gophers' starting center last season.

As a redshirt senior this year, Lynch is averaging career highs in points (10.1), rebounds (8.0) and blocks (4.1).

But he's also seen trouble.

In May 2016, Lynch was arrested on suspicion of raping a 19 year old woman in a campus apartment. He was suspended from the team at that time.

This potential suspension until 2020 stems from the second EOAA investigation for a different incident. The April incident occurred in Lynch's dorm room, the woman said.

The school had suspended Lynch while the local authorities probed the case. He has been discussed as an National Basketball Association prospect.

Minnesota coach Richard Pitino is reportedly scheduled to meet with the media sometime Friday morning.

The Gophers play host to IN on Saturday.
