Final 'Game of Thrones' season will air in 2019

Game of Thrones stars Kit Harington as Jon Snow, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister, Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister, Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark, and Maisie Williams as Arya Stark.

While it's been speculated the final season of the series would not air until 2019, HBO made the news official on Thursday.

Game of Thrones Season 8 will feature directors David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, David Nutter and Miguel Sapochnikm, with the writers on board for the new season including David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill. Leaving fans with only seven episodes as opposed to its typical 10 episode season. As the biggest hit in HBO's history, one the subscription service hoped to continue for additional seasons, keeping the show around awhile long isn't a bad thing. Now, it can spend its time and resources making an Emmy bid for Season 7 in 2018 rather than trying to promote the climactic final season. They will collaborate on the six episodes of the series' eighth and last season.

The television series has already advanced beyond the events of George RR Martin's five published novels in his A Song of Ice and Fire series.

The executive producers of the series are David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger and Bernadette Caulfield.

HBO made it known a year ago that the hit series would end with Season 8.

Meanwhile, Season 7 of Game Of Thrones was the show's highest-rated yet.
