Keith Jackson, legendary college football broadcaster, dies at 89

Jackson retired in 2006 after being the voice of college football for several generations. It came during the 2006 Rose Bowl, when Texas QB Vince Young scored in the final seconds to cap a stunning upset of heavily-favored USC in the National Championship game. He also worked National Football League and NBA games, numerous World Series, 10 Olympics and auto racing. He worked at the ABC affiliate in Seattle, KOMO, for 10 years, including conducting the first live sports broadcast from the Soviet Union to the United States in 1958. The Rose Bowl named their radio and television spaces after Jackson in 2015. It was Jackson who proclaimed the Rose Bowl "The Grandaddy of Them All". But Jackson decided he couldn't stay away from football and kept broadcasting for the next seven years, primarily calling games in the western part of the country.

He joined ABC in 1965, and many of his most memorable calls were in the biggest college football games. He popularized many catchphrases, most prominently his famous "whoa, Nellie", and is also credited for coining the term "The Big House" for Michigan Stadium.

A native of Georgia, Jackson served in the Marine Corps before attending Washington State University where the broadcast building was renamed in his honor in 2014. Jackson also called college basketball games with Dick Vitale.
