'See how the chocolate melts in the sun'

A tweet by Spartak Moscow on Saturday

The post, which has subsequently been deleted, was released on the club's official and verified Twitter account on Saturday and included emoji symbols of chocolate bars and a sunshine in the headline.

Spartak Moscow have been accused of racism after posting a video of three black players stretching during a warm-weather training session with the caption "see how the chocolate melts in the sun".

Outraged condemnations and demands for an apology followed.

After the initial game between the sides in Moscow this season, Liverpool made a complaint after Brewster's team-mate Bobby Adekanye was racially abused by fans.

The incident comes just six months before Russian Federation hosts the World Cup, and is the second alleged incidence of racism in which the club have been involved this season.

The Russian football union, however, have put former Chelsea midfielder Alexi Smertin in charge of investigating racism in Russian football.

"This shows a shocking level of ignorance", said Powar in a statement responding to Spartak's tweet.

For Russia's biggest club to tolerate and then celebrate racist references of this kind is wrong.

European football's governing body Uefa charged Spartak, who had to partially close their academy stadium for their next Uefa Youth League fixture, leaving 500 seats empty.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Piara Powar, executive director of Football Against Racism in Europe, highlighted the troubling nature of the tweet in a year when Russian Federation are set to host the World Cup.

They were sanctioned for Islamophobic chanting recently but clearly the message has not reached the players or the club management.
