Local Haitian author responds to Trump's alleged comments on immigrants

President Donald Trump ignited a firestorm on Thursday when it was reported that he had called Haiti, El Salvador, and African nations "shithole countries" at a bipartisan meeting on immigration, and said the USA needed more immigrants from countries like Norway.

The government of Botswana has become a first African country to react and shoot down United States (US) President, Donald Trump's "shithole" remarks to Haiti and African countries.

El Salvador's government has formally protested President Donald Trump's alleged remarks about immigrants from "s***hole countries" and demanded Washington's respect for its "noble and courageous people".

Many African leaders including Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo have expressed their disappointment over the comments despite the US President's claim the words being attributed to him are not the exact ones he used in the meeting. "What was really tough was the outlandish proposal made - a big setback for DACA!" - referring to his remarks.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the only Democrat at the meeting with Trump, confirmed the vulgar comments, telling reporters the president said "things that were hate-filled, vile and racist". "They're not shocking", said. The White House also did not explicitly deny the comments.

"Trump took particular issue with the characterization of his comments on Haiti".

Trump insisted he "never said anything derogatory about Haitians other than Haiti is, obviously, a very poor and troubled country".

In a private meeting in June of a year ago, Mr. Trump said immigrants from Haiti "all have AIDS".

"I'm proud to be a Haitian and an American", Vikings linebacker Emmanuel Lamur said. But more than anything else for those not bothered by a long trail of hateful, despicable comments by Donald Trump is the simple fact, we once again, are witnessing another episode of the Trump administration and President Donald Trump, lying. He has also considered recording all his meetings to prevent similar controversies in the future.

Monyela affirmed South Africa's alignment with other African countries, saying it supported the statements made about the comment by the African Union and the the Africa group of Ambassadors to the United Nations in NY.

But he added that the words attributed to him were "not the language used".

Biden's former Senate colleague Durbin came back to confront the president on the record.

"I don't know if there will be a shutdown, there shouldn't be", he said. Likewise, the Vatican described Trump's comments as "particularly harsh and offensive".
