Rotten Tomatoes condemns plan to flood 'Black Panther' with negative reviews

For Ryan Coogler, Black Panther was an opportunity to wrestle with questions he's been dealing with his entire life. Using hashtags like #DCOverMarvel and #BringDownDisney, organizers claim to be frustrated with Disney for its "treatment of franchises and its fanboys", according to the page's description. A collection of white nationalist trolls have announced, via Facebook, that they're determined to plague the film with negative ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, in order to bring down its overall audience score.

Before being booted off Facebook on Sunday, Variety reported that the group posted a call to employ the tactic to distort Black Panther's numbers.

"Such discussion can promote a diversity of perspectives and greater understanding", the statement said. Facebook also released a statement decrying what they saw as an act of "hate speech and bullying". "That's why we developed our Community Standards, which you can read on our site".

The rivalry between DC and Marvel fans is legendary, and Marvel movies have historically done better than DC ones.

The 31-year-old director helmed and co-wrote the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movie - which is based around the first ever African superhero - and while shooting the film, Coogler admitted he kept asking himself "what does it mean to be African?" Rotten Tomatoes was also aware of the plan and in a statement they released, they claim that they have security, network, and social experts who are closely monitoring their platforms. "The fact that I know that the film is of substance, I know it has a lot to offer to the world, I'm even more enthusiastic and blessed about this experience", Boseman said.

The eagerly awaited movie features a black lead character and a predominantly black cast and has already outpaced advanced sales of all other superhero films on movie ticket site Fandango.
