Trump takes aim at Schiff ahead of push to release Democrats' memo

Eugene Robinson Memo proves how far GOP has plunged into madness

The capital geared up for another installment on Monday: The House Intelligence Committee is expected to vote on whether to release a secret Democratic counter-memo that rebuts the one prepared by the majority and its chairman, Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif. Still, some Republicans, including Rep. Trey Gowdy of SC and House Speaker Paul Ryan have said the memo should not be used to undermine Mueller's probe.

The committee did not release the Democratic memo last week, with one Republican member saying revisions were needed so the memo would not endanger national security. They have a closed-door meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. ET on Monday.

Congressman Adam Schiff, the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, blasted President Donald Trump's criticisms of him, telling CNN that the White House chief of staff should "give him a time-out".

The panel vote was unanimous to make the classified Democratic document public.

Schiff has branded the GOP memo "a political hit job" and has questioned whether Nunes had co-ordinated with the White House in drafting the document seized on by the president to vent his grievances against the nation's premier law enforcement agencies.

Trump did not provide evidence that Schiff has illegally leaked confidential information.

Schiff quickly shot back: "Instead of tweeting false smears, the American people would appreciate it if you turned off the TV and helped solve the funding crisis, protected Dreamers or. really anything else".

The bias was "so damning he had to be removed from the case", said Shah. That is not described. "Must be stopped!" the president tweeted Monday.

Included in the were allegations that Trump had prostitutes in his hotel room during a stay in Moscow in 2013 and that Russian Federation had enough dirt on him to blackmail him.

The committee rejected that move last week.

At issue is whether the White House will allow him to answer questions about his time in the Trump administration.

The president claimed that Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) should one day be considered a hero for his memo attacking the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice.

"First he attacked me some months ago, calling me 'sleazy Adam Schiff, '" Schiff said. Schiff said he anticipated enough Republicans would support release to send the memo to the White House for declassification, and while allowing for the possibility Trump could block release of the memo and expressing concern he might redact some of it for political purposes, Schiff said he expects Trump will allow it to become public as well.

Nunes was asked during a January 29 committee meeting whether he had coordinated the memo with the White House.
