Eurostar announce London to Amsterdam route will not stop in Kent

Extensive preparations have been taking place in advance of the service with comprehensive testing on the new Dutch high-speed network now being finalised.

Eurostar direct rail services between London and Amsterdam will begin on 4 April, the company has announced, in an eagerly awaited move expected to spark a price war with airlines. Tickets will go on sale February 20.

Since 1994 when Eurostar trains first connected London and Paris, travel between the two cities, including rail and air journeys, has doubled. "As the Netherlands grows in popularity as a key business and tourism hub, the potential for the new service and the overall market is significant", Eurostar said in a statement on Friday.

Nicolas Petrovic, chief executive of Eurostar (massive LAD), said: "The launch of our service to the Netherlands represents an exciting advance in cross-Channel travel and heralds a new era in global high-speed rail".

Each journey will take between three and four hours with trains reaching speeds of 186 mph. "With direct services from the United Kingdom to the Netherlands, France and Belgium, we are transforming the links between the United Kingdom and three of Europe's top trading nations".

Amsterdam trains will offer a journey time of 3h 41min, with trains to Rotterdam taking 3h 1min, and a new record journey time of 1hr 48min to Brussels, a saving of 17 minutes. "With a £1 billion investment in our new state-of the art trains and enhanced connectivity on the European network, passengers can now enjoy fast, seamless rail connections between Britain and mainland Europe and a transformed travel experience". The company hopes that a new link between London and Amsterdam will boost traffic.

These issues mean direct services returning to London will not be in place until the end of next year. They will run nonstop to Brussels, Belgium, in one hour and 48 minutes, shaving 17 minutes off the Eurostar's current travel time between these two cities.
