North Korea Showcases Military Prowess Ahead of Winter Olympics

As Fogel put it to EW while walking the red carpet at the Director's Guild of America Awards last Saturday, "Russia's been banned from the Olympics technically, but of course, within the corruption of the International Olympic Committee, they've found their ways creatively around this ban to allow Russia in the Olympics".

Usually held in April, the parade took place this year on the eve of the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics being staged in the South Korean mountain resort of Pyeongchang, just across the heavily fortified border.

CAS secretary general Matthieu Reeb appeared at a media conference to announce the decision, which he read out as a statement.

"The applications filed by Russian athletes and coaches have been dismissed", the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said in a statement early on February 9.

A Keremeos massage therapist is already in South Korea working to keep Canadian athletes competing in top form.

Patience, skill and determination are three factors that make Team USA's mixed doubles curling a serious contender to medal at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.

That Olympic message, meanwhile, was for many months at risk of being diminished, just as before the Rio 2016 Summer Games, by the ongoing saga involving allegations of doping involving Russian athletes and officials.

Overall, the athletes at PyeongChang will compete in 7 sports in 102 events - biathlon, bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey, luge, skating and skiing - with 15 varied disciplines across all sports.

Among the athletes who were hoping to gatecrash the Olympics by forcing an invite through CAS were Victor Ahn and and Elena Nikitina.

The white Ilyushin-62 aircraft, marked in Korean script "Democratic People's Republic of Korea", the North's official name, and its tailfin emblazoned with a Northern emblem, touched down at Incheon airport near Seoul.

The alpine town first bid for the 2010 Games but narrowly lost out to Vancouver, and suffered similar heartbreak when it was beaten to the 2014 Olympics by Sochi.

Nikitina told TASS: "I'm very disappointed". And then when CAS took that away, it did the opposite. "I need to consult with lawyers".

In rejecting the appeals, the CAS said the athletes had not demonstrated the process was "carried out in a discriminatory, arbitrary, or unfair manner".

"The panel also concluded that there was no evidence the IRP or the OAR IG improperly exercised their discretion". American swimmer Ryan Lochte once said that 70 to 75 percent of Olympians are humping each other, so yeah, you might as well promote wrapping it up.

They will have lunch with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Saturday, Moon's office said.

Moon and Abe met Friday hours before the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
