PyeongChang 2018

The North Korean delegation's arrival came a day after Kim Jong Un presided over a massive military parade in Pyongyang that was highlighted by the country's developmental intercontinental ballistic missiles, which in three flight tests past year showed potential ability to reach deep into the USA mainland when perfected.

She and Kim Jong Un both studied in Switzerland.

After two failed Olympic bids that emphasized the high-sounding notion that the games could help make peace with North Korea, Pyeongchang finally sold its successful try in 2011 on the decidedly capitalistic goal of boosting winter sports tourism in Asia.

Kim delivered a New Year's Day address offering "detente" and setting in motion the chain of events that led to the isolated nation sending about 500 North Koreans, including 22 athletes, to the Olympics.

The meat is officially classed as "detestable" in South Korea, and while the designation has no legal binding the tradition is now taboo among the younger generation who see the animals as pets and not livestock. The visit marks the first time that a member of the Kim family has visited the country.

U.S. officials have remained suspicious over Kim's intentions as the North cosies up to the South over the Olympics.

Kim Yo Jong didn't attend the reception for VIPs before the Opening Ceremonies, but she was in the VIP box for the big event, dressed in a black coat and hat. Also in the photo are South Korean President Moon Jae-in (bottom left in the white coat) and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (bottom right, next to Pence) - both close USA allies whose countries are in the direct crosshairs of North Korea.

Japan's national team has 124 athletes, the most in its Winter Olympic history.

South Korean senior officials, including Unification Minister Cho Myoung-gyon, greeted the North Korean delegation at Incheon Airport.

Moon, in a statement, said athletes from North and South will "work together for victory".

The two Koreas marched in behind a white flag that was emblazoned with a map of the Korean peninsula depicted in blue. On top of that, both North and South Korea will field a unified women's ice hockey team at the 2018 games.

South Korean president Moon Jae In, who has shown a willingness to thaw frosty relations with the North, welcomed the decision.

Its agents blew up a South Korean airliner ahead of the 1988 Seoul Olympics in an attempt to dissuade visitors; then it boycotted its rival's Olympic debut on the world stage.
