The White House was not fully aware of the extent of the domestic abuse allegations against former White House aide Rob Porter until photographs of an ex-wife with a black eye emerged on Wednesday, a White House spokesman said yesterday.

President Donald Trump's chief of staff is facing criticism after the resignation of a senior aide. One of the people said Trump was angry that Kelly did not bring the Porter allegations to him sooner.

"Rob Porter was never denied a security clearance".

Shah would not specify how much the White House was aware of regarding the allegations against Porter over the past year during the news briefing.

"A lot of us could have done better", deputy press secretary Raj Shah told reporters when asked about the situation - a rare statement of contrition from the Trump White House. "There is no place for domestic violence in our society", Kelly said.

Porter's title understates his significance in the White House. But White House officials said Kelly pushed Porter to stay in the job even after the release of the photos. Someone in his position would have had an interim clearance while the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted a background check, according to one official. "I've lost count as to how many Trump appointees have been sidelined due to their past views or conduct".

All of the officials interviewed for this story requested anonymity to discuss a personnel and national security matter. The secretary would have access to two computer systems, one classified and the other unclassified, the former official said.

He was filling in the shoes of White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders who is away on a vacation.

Porter's second ex-wife, Jennifer Willoughby, told CNN that on the honeymoon after their 2009 wedding, "He started calling me names, calling me a "f***ing bitch, ' how I behaved was 'f***ing ridiculous" and most of that was instigated around my not having sex with him often enough on our honeymoon". The website published a copy of the order.

Porter's first wife, Colbie Holderness, told the DailyMail.com that Porter choked and punched her during the five years they were husband and wife.

Some White House aides were particularly disturbed by the photo The Intercept published of Holderness with a black eye. He amended that statement late Wednesday, saying he was "shocked by the new allegations" but standing by his original comment. McGahn made other officials aware of the accusations she communicated but took no concrete steps, the official said. "I have been transparent and truthful about these vile claims, but I will not further engage publicly with a coordinated smear campaign". "I just don't see that it would have been something accepted in the White House that I worked in".

Holderness did not respond to attempts to contact her by telephone and email.

"He, like many of us, did not see that in Rob Porter, did not see what these allegations have brought forward", Shah said. "I am proud to serve alongside him".

Several White House aides said Wednesday that Kelly's statement was a mistake.

Porter was close to chief of staff John Kelly, and now Kelly is in a harsh spotlight for his efforts to keep the aide in a highly sensitive West Wing job.

White House communications director Hope Hicks is romantically involved with Porter and insiders have told the Hill that she was involved with crafting the White House's initial defense of him.

"The President wants to see legal immigration reforms".

He was one of a handful of aides who helped to write the president's first State of the Union address. As an assistant to the president, Porter was paid the top White House staff salary of $179,000.
