Activist Ravi Ragbir Thwarts ICE's Try To Deport Him, For Now

Hundreds rally in New York against deportation of immigration activist Ravi Ragbir

The New York-based Immigrant Defense Project said the suit - Ragbir vs Homan - was filed in federal district court in the Southern District of New York "to challenge the recent targeting of immigrant rights activists by federal immigration officials".

Hundreds of people have rallied in New York City in support of an immigration activist fighting deportation. For instance, Jean Motrevil, a co-founder of New Sanctuary Coalition, was deported January 16 by ICE and sent to Haiti.

According to an earlier News India Times report, Ragbir had come to the United States from Trinidad in 1991 and obtained a green card in 1994.

"You can't deport a movement", said his wife Amy Gottlieb, an immigrant rights attorney and advocate with the American Friends Service Committee. Councilmen Jumaane Williams (D-Flatbush) and Ydanis Rodriguez (D-Manhattan) - who were arrested during a protest following Ragbir's January 11 detention - accused the police department of conspiring with immigration agents during a Council hearing on public safety, an allegation that both Mayor de Blasio and the police department deny.

The stay was granted by a federal court in the Southern District of NY as Ragbir and his supporters pursue a lawsuit asserting that he and other immigrant leaders have been targeted for deportation due to their 1st Amendment-protected political speech.

According to the New York Post, Ragbir, an Indian American, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a routine check-in on January 11 which sparked protests leading to almost 20 arrests.

Ragbir will still be required by ICE to check in to 26 Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan tomorrow at 10 a.m., as thousands of immigrants are required to do on a regular basis each year.

Ragbir hails from Trinidad and Tobego, and has been a USA permanent resident since 1994, but has fought a deportation order since 2000, after he served a 30-month prison term for wire fraud, which led the feds to revoke his residency. What's more, ICE sent him to a detention center more than.

"Today was a good day for Mr. Ragbir and for everyone who cares about immigrants' rights or the First Amendment", said William Perdue, a lawyer involved in the case.
