Three aircrafts belonging to the fleet low-priced carrier (LCC) IndiGo have been grounded due to engine related issues, the civil aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said on Saturday.

"Following a problem identified on a limited number of recently delivered Pratt & Whitney GTF engines involving the rear hub of the high-pressure compressor rotor, Airbus and Pratt & Whitney are reviewing the situation", writes the aircraft manufacturer with no further precision.

An Airbus spokesman said the planemaker is "in discussions with customers about delivery schedules".

P&W engines have flown 500,000h since the first geared turbofan-powered A320neo entered service in January 2016 with Lufthansa, P&W says.

"In line with standard airworthiness procedures, EASA, the European Aviation Safety Agency has published an Emergency Airworthiness Directive".

Aircraft using alternative engines from CFM International are not affected. Airbus has informed its affected A320neo customers and operators.

Firstly, EASA has said that if an aircraft with both engines being affected has completed three flight cycles after the issuance of the airworthiness directive, it should not operate. "Some have made a decision to put off their delivery and others have not". "We confirm of receiving the recommendations by Pratt & Whitney as well as EASA (European Aviation Safety Regulator) with respect to the A320neo aircraft powered by PW1100G - JM engines".

IndiGo, owned by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd, said that it is in contact with Pratt & Whitney to address the results of a recent finding.

SWISS now operates a fleet of 15 GTF-powered Bombardier C Series aircraft, including both the CS100 and CS300 models, with another 15 aircraft on order.

The problem stems from a component in the engine that can show early signs of wear, and it's located in an area that must withstand high pressure, an Airbus spokesperson said. "In full and complete compliance with the requirements, none of GoAir aircraft have two of these engines on the same aircraft", it said, adding that no aircraft is required to be grounded.
