"Our sympathies are with the families at this time", stated Dr. Nicola Mercer, Medical Officer of Health and CEO for Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health (WDGPH).

A child from the Midlands Region of SC died from complications associated with influenza infection. The death happened in the Columbia area, but officials have not said exactly where.

Harrist says the state continues to see widespread influenza with indications of high activity levels.

"This flu season is turning out to be particularly challenging".

South Carolinians are encouraged to take the following preventive measures in addition to getting a flu shot. By comparison, there are six confirmed victims of flu between the ages of 50 and 64, three between the ages of 25 and 49, one between the ages of 19 and 24, and one between the ages of 5 and 17.

"Influenza is a serious respiratory infection and the flu season is not over".

"Protect yourself and your family with the flu shot now", said Mercer. It can cause mild to severe illness and can be deadly - especially to vulnerable people, including the very young, the elderly and those with certain chronic health conditions. Symptoms include fever, headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose and muscle aches.

Avoid people who are sick. "Staying home from work, school, day care and errands when you are ill is important". By doing so, you will help keep others from getting sick, too.

Downes also recommended washing one's hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub for at least 20 seconds and disinfecting surfaces and objects that may, through habitual use, come into contact with an infected person.

Wash your hands often and thoroughly. Germs are often spread when someone touches something that is covered with germs and then touches their eyes, nose or mouth.
