Miserable Flu Season Is Breaking Records

As with the previous week, 48 states reported widespread ILI activity, with only OR and Hawaii reporting regional activity.

Flu is now sickening and hospitalizing Americans at rates not seen in almost a decade, and the season is still getting worse, federal health officials said Friday. Another pediatric patient also suffered a flu-related death, but health officials have not released any information.

During the 2016-2017 flu season, there were eight pediatric deaths in NY, six of which occurred in the city, according to officials.

Schuchat added, "We don't know if we have hit the peak yet". "But it happens every year".

Symptoms of the flu include a cough, sore throat, congestion, body aches, fatigue, headaches, sometimes stomach issues, and only sometimes a fever. Those with symptoms but who normally are healthy are encouraged to stay home during until they feel better. Flu vaccine and anti-viral medications are available but many pharmacies have limited supplies.

At least 63 children have died from the flu so far this season and there's no sign of it letting up as the number of deaths and hospitalizations continue to rise, officials said.

The national spread of the flu is worse than it's been in years, according to recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Still, its long-lasting intensity has surprised experts, who are still sorting out why it's been so bad. One possibility is that the vaccine is doing an unusually poor job; US data on effectiveness is expected next week. By comparison, the 2009 H1N1 swine flu outbreak peaked around January 1, just short of 6 percent. That was the case with the swine flu back in 2009, but for this year's flu season, it's just a particularly prevalent case of an illness we've seen before - reaching pandemic levels while not actually being a pandemic.

"Overall, hospitalizations are significantly higher than what we've seen [in the past] for this time of year", Schuchat said.

Mercer would not confirm if the deaths were at the same school, but said the cases are not related to one another. He had developed a flu complication, bacterial pneumonia. "It's beginning to feel like a marathon", said Dr. Anthony Marchetti, emergency department medical director at Upson Regional Medical Center, a 115-bed hospital in rural Georgia. "It's not as aggressive as H1N1 was back around 2009, but it's more aggressive" than usual.

"We extend our condolences to this family and all families in SC who have suffered lost during this flu season", Dr. Lilian Peake, DHEC's Director of Public Health, said.

But, as always, it's hard to predict whether flu activity will continue to increase in the coming weeks or if the worst may already be behind us. In any case, cost will not be a barrier to flu vaccines offered in DHEC clinics.

New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett on Tuesday called the flu that is most commonly going around this season a "wily virus", and urged New Yorkers to get the flu shot.

MYTH: The flu shot gives you the flu.
