Rachel Brand, 3rd Ranking Official At Justice Dept., Resigns

Rachel Brand the associate attorney general in the Department of Justice is stepping down from her position Fox News has confirmed

Brand, who was named associate attorney general last May, is bailing for a job in the private sector after working at Justice for the past three administrations, according to The New York Times, which first reported the story. Mr. Trump, who has called the investigation a witch hunt, has considered firing Mr. Rosenstein.

The Times report cites two sources briefed on the matter.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently praised Brand and his second-in-command, Rod Rosenstein, before the Devin Nunes memo was released on Friday. Just as he refused to rule out firing Rosenstein, he also ordered special counsel Robert Mueller fired past year, the New York Times reported, but later relented.

Neither Brand nor a justice department spokesperson could not be immediately reached for comment.

Photo Rachel Brand, the associate attorney general, was widely seen as the most likely successor to Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general overseeing the inquiry into Russian influence in the 2016 election.

Rosenstein now oversees Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between President Trump's campaign and the Russian government, and Trump has flouted the possibility of firing him.

The White House said last week that Trump has no plans to fire Rosenstein.

The New York Times did not say that Trump's attacks on the Mueller probe were the reason that Brand was resigning.

Her position gives her oversight over a wide range of Justice Department offices and initiatives, including the civil rights and antitrust divisions.
