What Could Possibly Happen to Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster in Space

The rocket's three reusable boosters lifted the vehicle skyward, sending company founder Elon Musk's personal Tesla Roadster on a journey toward Mars orbit.

The Heavy became the most powerful rocket in use today, doubling the liftoff punch of its closest competitor. The orbit loops out beyond Mars, into the asteroid belt, at its farthest point.

This orbital diagram shows the path of Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster and its Starman mannequin around the sun.

You may have recently noticed pictures of a auto in space on the Interweb news sites and on your Twitter feeds.

Batteries powering the camera views of the Roadster were only expected to last about 12 hours, so they won't provide close-up views of the vehicle near Mars or an asteroid, but that was never the idea.

Falcon 9 will continue to be the company's main workhorse, and Falcon Heavy will be utilized for transporting larger satellites into space (after much more testing). Usually test flights carry nothing of value, like concrete blocks.

But in a launch market where throwing all rocket parts away after one launch is the norm, SpaceX is poised to quickly recoup its sizable investment in Falcon Heavy.

While Tesla's true believers love these stunts, some analysts are questioning whether Musk should be spending more time fixing Tesla's woes. Without a human element, even the fiery eruptions of a rocket launch can start to feel repetitive, especially in our present age of instant access to the spectacular and otherworldly.

"I think the imagery of it is something that's going to get people excited around the world", Musk said.

The Falcon Heavy has many functions, including its ability to bring cargo to the global space station.

Asked whether he believes Musk, who has failed many times to deliver on Tesla forecasts, analyst Colin Rusch said "no".

But Musk said Wednesday he has no plans to step aside as CEO.

Mars is driving all of Musk's space efforts. Both of the side core rockets had successfully made it back to their landing pads at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (see Figure 3), which made for some awesome photos, but the main center core missed its target barge by 100m and hit the ocean at approximately 500km.

He was referring to the historic launch completed by his other company, SpaceX, on Wednesday.

"What we can say with confidence is that we are taking many actions to systematically address bottlenecks. and these actions should result in our production rate significantly increasing during the rest of Q1 and through Q2".

Musk noted that SpaceX used only internal funds to finance the Heavy, investing more than $500 million in developmental costs.

In the meantime, with the Heavy demo out of the way, Musk said SpaceX is putting its commercial crew effort for NASA front and center.

"While management was confident another capital raise would not be necessary, we remain cautious as we expect cash burn to return to about $1 billion in the first quarter of 2018", Langan wrote in a research note.
