A California state police officer escorting a motorcade carrying Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada was injured when his motorcycle collided with a passenger auto, U.S. news media reported.

Neither Mr. Trudeau, nor any members of his staff were involved in the accident, though they were aware of the crash and have been in touch with local authorities.

President Donald Trump called the 24-year-old agreement a job-killing "disaster" on the campaign trail, and he has threatened to pull out unless the deal requires more auto production in the USA, while shifting additional government contracts to US companies.

Trudeau, who was traveling in the motorcade at the time of the crash was not injured, officials said.

Trudeau also spoke at length about economic disillusionment and a "generalized sense of anxiety" he's observed in both Canada and the United States.

"We're going to continue to make an argument that it's not enough to just trade, we have to ensure that the benefits of trade are properly and fairly shared", he said.

Trudeau offered a counterpoint to Trump's threats to pull out of NAFTA, and promoted Canada as a destination for California tech companies uneasy with the president's immigration policies.

A speech in which Trudeau evokes Reagan could force Republicans who lionize the former president to reconcile abandoning one of their hero's key accomplishments, Speer said.

ABC News has reached out to Trudeau's office for comment.

The topic of free trade and the negotiation of a renewed North American free trade pact will be hard to avoid Wednesday when the prime minister takes the stage at the University of Chicago. He said negotiators are also within range of closing "several more bread-and-butter chapters" at the next meeting.

Trudeau said negotiators have already agreed on three chapters - rules around competition, small and medium-sized enterprises and anti-corruption measures. For the prime minister, the potential that the next generation might be the first to see shrinking opportunities and economic decline "is a cause to question everything about the social contract, the contract we create within our societies".

U.S. President Ronald Reagan stands with Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney at the annual G7 Summit in Toronto on June 19, 1988, five months after they signed the Canada-U.S.

"I made a dumb joke a few days ago that seems to have gone a little viral", Trudeau said, without being prompted by reporters.

The trade relationship between Illinois and Canada came up repeatedly during public events Trudeau had earlier in the day, first with Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and then Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
