Four Elephants Killed After Speeding Train Hits Them In Assam

They said the spot between Hawaipur and Lamshakhan stations, some 180 km east of Guwahati, is a notified elephant corridor.

A passenger train collided with a herd of elephants crossing the tracks in India's north-east, an official said on Sunday (Feb 11), killing four of the endangered animals in the high-speed accident.

"The incident happened around 9-40 last evening and took place between Hawaipur and Lamsikham of Lumding division".

None of the train passengers were injured during the accident, which derailed the vehicle.

"Five elephants, including three calves, reportedly died due to the impact".

The incident took place at around 9:30 pm near Habaipur railway station, almost 180 km east from Guwahati.

"The 19 locations were decided at a meeting in December 21 in Lumding", a forest official said.

Seventy elephants had lost their lives previous year due to electrocution, speeding trains, poisoning, human attacks, and other accidents besides natural death, a forest department official said.

The NFR is keen on mitigating elephant mortality on railway tracks but at the same time safety of train movements has to be ensured, he added.

An official from World Wildlife Fund says, areas in Assam where elephant deaths are on the rise have lost 70 per cent of its forest cover, forcing the animals to stray into villages.

Locals alleged that they tried to signal the loco pilot to slow down due to the movement of elephants but to no avail, resulting in death of four pachyderms. Despite the mortality, elephant population in Assam rose from 5,246 in 2002 to 5,719 past year.
