Several churchgoers and priest injured in machete attack on Catholic Church in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

A priest and three other people were seriously injured when a man attacked a church congregation with a sword during Sunday mass in Indonesia.

According to the spokesman, the attacker had been shot in the stomach, while the condition of the wounded victims is still unknown.

A 22-year-old man armed with a sword or machete attacked members of the congregation at St Lidwina Church.

"Everybody started panicking and screaming".

Church security tried to prevent the attacker from entering the church, but he forced his way in, police officials told CNN Indonesia.

Prier, who has been living in Indonesia for decades, is now an Indonesian citizen.

"After the warning shot was sacked, the attacker charged towards the officer with his sword".

All the injured people have been rushed into a nearby hospital for medical treatments, police said. "We need to dig out more details and question the perpetrator", said spokesman Yulianto.

Police are investigating the case, trying to find out the motive of the strike and the network linked with the man.

In 2016 several children were injured after a man threw Molotov cocktails at a church during a Sunday service.

People in the church were pursued by the assailant while they were running out through the door.
