The reasons North Korean athletes won't defect

Moon and President Donald Trump have said they'd be willing to meet with the North Korean leader under the right conditions. The president also honored Ji Seong-ho, who suffered starvation and torture at the hands of the Kim regime and eventually defected to a better life in prosperous South Korea.

At a VIP reception before the opening ceremony, Pence and Kim Yong Nam were in the same room, according to Jarrod Agen, his deputy chief of staff, but Pence "did not come across the North Korean delegation" at the event.

Vice President Mike Pence was seated in close proximity to Kim Jong Un's sister Kim Yo Jong for the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in South Korea on Friday.

The 30-year-old younger sister of North Korea's supreme leader made history on Friday as the first person from the Kim Dynasty to step on South Korean soil since the end of the Korean War in 1953.

North Korea has sent some of the highest level officials ever to the south for these games, the result of diplomacy by Seoul that led to an agreement between the two countries - still formally at war - to participate together in the Winter Games.

Speaking at his swearing in ceremony a year ago, Moon said he would be willing to travel to Pyongyang "under the right conditions", adding that "for peace on the Korean Peninsula, I will do everything that I can do".

North Korea's decision to participate has eased tensions after months of saber rattling and missile and nuclear tests that have raised fears it's closer-than-expected to achieving its goal of developing a nuclear weapon that could reach the USA mainland. "But today we thought it was important to make sure the truth is told". The U.S. and Finland women's hockey teams also play Saturday.

Just hours earlier, 47 Russians lost a court bid to take part in the Games after they were left off the list of athletes deemed clean from doping.

An International Olympic Committee spokesman said drones that were scheduled to be used in the opening ceremony were not deployed.

But Tonga's Pita Taufatofua, echoing his eye-catching entrance at the Rio Olympics, happily braved the chill as he appeared stripped to the waist and with his chest heavily oiled.

As he seeks to counter what he called North Korean "propaganda" around the Winter Olympics, Pence has filled the days leading up to the Games with his own symbolism and rhetoric.

An inter-Korean summit would be the third of its kind, after Kim's father and predecessor Kim Jong Il met the South's Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun in 2000 and 2007 respectively, both of them in Pyongyang.
