Trump ends brief government shutdown - DETAILS…

This followed objections from Democrats over the absence of any immigration component and from fiscal conservatives over the sheer level of spending.

Friday's deal allows for $165 billion in additional defense spending over two years, helping Trump deliver on his promise to boost the military. First time this has happened in a long time. Next week the White House is expected to announce a $1.5 trillion infrastructure proposal that would require $200 billion in government funding - 10 times what was allotted in the just-passed spending bill.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and others in her party had opposed the bill because Republican House leaders would not guarantee her a debate later on bipartisan steps to protect about 700,000 "Dreamer" immigrants from deportation.

The lapse in federal funding lasted less than 6 hours-with the government officially unfunded from 12:01 a.m. on Friday to about 5:30 a.m. when lawmakers scrambled to pass a six-week spending bill.

Some Democrats, including minority leader Nancy Pelosi, also said they opposed the measure because it did not include a deal that would protect some 700,000 "Dreamers" - immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children - from deportation. A last-minute maneuver by Sen. House Speaker Paul Ryan had not offered Pelosi an equivalent guarantee in the House, although he said in a speech before Friday's vote that he would push ahead for a deal.

The result: the government endured a short-term shutdown in the wee hours of the morning, though most would never feel its effects.

The breakdown came largely in the senate, when, after a day of inaction, Republican senator Rand Paul of Kentucky went rogue and stalled a vote in protest over his party's willingness to burst the budget.

Republicans were sheepish about the bushels of dollars for Democratic priorities and the return next year of $1 trillion-plus deficits.

Corker voted for the recent Republican tax cut after raising similar concerns in the weeks leading up to the vote. He said he could not "look the other way because my party is now complicit in the deficits".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., set next Monday as the start of a free-wheeling immigration battle, a debate he promised when Democrats agreed to vote to reopen the government last month. "There aren't a whole of history books about great points in the U.S. Senate".

The Republicans took the support of House Democrats to clear the bill with 240-186 votes, CNN reported.

The brief shutdown in Washington came at a sensitive time for financial markets, with world stock markets diving in the past week.

"Sadly, we needed some Democrats votes for passage".

The budget measure provides Pentagon spending increases sought by Trump and the GOP, more money for domestic agencies demanded by Democrats and $89 billion that both wanted for disaster relief.
