Trump has 'full confidence' in Kelly

On Friday night, The Washington Post first reported another White House aide, David Sorensen, resigned after his ex-wife accused him of abuse, including running over her foot with a auto.

West Wing staff - including chief of staff John Kelly - initially defended Porter despite the allegations of abuse by both of his ex-wives.

In a week when two White House staff members resigned amid domestic abuse allegations, President Donald Trump lamented in a tweet Saturday that lives are being "destroyed by a mere allegation".

Mr Sorensen's ex-wife Jessica Corbett told the Washington Post that he was physically abusive to her while they were married.

Sorensen denied the allegations, and told the Post that Corbett had "punched him on multiple occasions;" he provided "photos of what he said were injuries his ex-wife inflicted upon him during their fights, including bruises and scrapes".

The White House has faced a firestorm of criticism over its handling of the allegations and its response to them.

Porter has denied the allegations and blamed a "smear campaign" against him.

That prompted a sharp rebuke from Democrats like Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez, who slammed the White House's "culture of misogyny".

Others faulted Hope Hicks, the communications director, who had been romantically involved with Porter, for soliciting statements of support for him when the accusations became public. In November, the official said, one of Porter's ex-girlfriends called McGahn to describe allegations of domestic abuse by the aide.

"He also, as you probably know, says he's innocent and I think you have to remember that", Trump said.

"It's a, obviously, tough time for him".

Staff secretary Rob Porter (left) and chief of staff John Kelly at the White House. He also seemed to suggest that he doubted the accusations against the ousted staff secretary.

Budget chief Mulvaney similarly said on Fox News Sunday that Kelly's rumored departure is "much ado about nothing". Reuters has not independently confirmed the allegations against Porter, or against Trump.

The White House declined to comment Wednesday when asked about Kelly's knowledge of the allegations against Porter.

"While we are all processing the shocking and troubling allegations made against a former White House staffer, I want you to know that we all take matters of domestic violence very seriously".

"We wish him well", he told reporters.

Hicks, 29, has been able to keep a quiet role while advising the president, but in recent weeks, she's been questioned by special counsel Robert Mueller's office in its investigation over whether Trump tried to obstruct the ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, reports The Washington Post.
