US, Japan, S Korea coaction on N Korea is firm, says Abe

The visual was important, a USA official said.

Cyber-security experts from South Korea's defence ministry, plus four other ministries, formed part of a taskforce investigating the shutdown, Games organisers said, adding that it didn't affect the opening ceremony.

Vice President Pence's spokeswoman on Saturday warned people not to "whitewash North Korea's record" while responding to a CNN story on how the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was "stealing the show" at the Winter Olympics.

A day before the opening ceremony of the games, tens of thousands of North Korean soldiers marched Thursday in the country's capital along with tanks and trucks mounted with rocket launchers to mark the 70th anniversary of the founding of its military.

Kim Yo Jong claps next to Kim Yong Nam at the Switzerland v Korea women's hockey game on February 10, 2018.

Mr Moon hoped to use the Winter Olympics, which began last Friday in north-east Pyeongchang county, to ease tensions with the North.

The smiles and handshakes were friendlier than some of the North's past history with the complex - in 1968 Pyongyang sent commandos to attack it to try to assassinate the South's then leader.

But both South Korea and the U.S. has been cautious about the talks, saying there will not be progress without North Korea giving up nuclear weapons. "[We should] be careful about North Korea's charm offensive", Abe told Moon.

Most notably, Kim sat directly behind U.S. Vice President Mike Pence at Friday night's opening ceremony in Pyeongchang, creating the unique image of two top officials whose governments have been locked in a loud argument, suddenly seated just feet away from each other.

Later, he skipped a formal dinner at which he was due to share a table with North Korea's ceremonial head of state Kim Yong Nam.

President Moon welcomed Kim Yo-jong and another high-ranking North Korean official for lunch at the presidential residence, and she took the opportunity to extend an official invitation for Moon to visit North Korea.

"There is no daylight between the United States, the Republic of Korea and Japan on the need to continue to isolate North Korea economically and diplomatically until they abandon their nuclear and ballistic missile program", Pence told reporters during the return flight to the United States.

"The entire world is watching us here today and expectations on both Koreas are high", Moon said.

The two leaders affirmed their shared stance on heightening pressure on North Korea to step back from its nuclear programme.

China has said it hopes the thaw in ties between North and South Korea over the Winter Olympics can be translated into regular talks between the two, and even to talks between Pyongyang and Washington.

Seoul, Feb 11 North Korean media lauded the players and supporters of the unified Korean women's ice hockey team today after their first match at the Olympics - without mentioning their 8-0 drubbing.
