Pence continued his tough rhetoric even after South Korean officials announced North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had invited President Moon Jae-in to Pyongyang for talks.

Kim Jong-un wanted to meet Moon "at an early date", a spokesman for the Blue House said.

Kim Yo Jong, top right, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, sits alongside Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of North Korean Parliament, and behind U.S. Vice President Mike Pence.

She handed an invitation from her brother for the President of South Korea Moon Jae-in to visit him in Pyongyang.

Moon and Kim Yong Nam planned to return to the Games venue to watch the joint Korean women's ice hockey team - the first ever combined team at the Olympics - take on Switzerland, the Blue House said.

"We will not allow North Korea to hide behind the Olympic banner the reality that they enslave their people and threaten the wider region". "North Korea bombing, please".

The response was seen as meaning that there should first be progress on efforts to resolve the North Korean nuclear standoff, such as talks between the United Sates and the North, before what would be a third inter-Korean summit takes place.

"To see it finally happen, it really did not only give me goosebumps, but I think the whole public and I guess the entire world", said Bach.

Yet the pageantry around a "Peace Olympics" has also created disquiet for many South Koreans.

He has used the Winter Olympics, which opened in the South Korean area of PyeongChang on Friday, as a springboard for detente with North Korea.

Pence has said the USA will impose further sanctions to force North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons program that includes the ongoing development of a long range nuclear missile that can target the US mainland.

The vice president's visit was also marked by bad blood between Pence and some USA athletes.

Speaking to reporters during a flight on Saturday, Mr Pence said: "There is no daylight between the United States, the Republic of Korea and Japan on the need to continue to isolate North Korea economically and diplomatically until they abandon their nuclear and ballistic missile programme".

Earlier Friday, Warmbier and Pence met with a group of North Korean defectors, and Pence warned about a possible North Korean "charm offensive" during the games.

At a Games rife with political overtones, US Vice-President Mike Pence was at the nearby Gangneung Ice Arena as the first North Korean athlete flopped.

Those in the Village who do not read Korean were likely concerned about what the "Emergency Alert" might be, considering the ongoing tensions between the Olympics host nation and the volatile country to the north.

"If the North was genuinely interested in improving relations with the South, it would.(have) refrained from conducting a military parade on the eve of the Olympics which is contrary to the Olympic spirit", Stangarone added.
