Its agents blew up a South Korean airliner ahead of the 1988 Seoul Olympics in an attempt to dissuade visitors; then it boycotted its rival's Olympic debut on the world stage.

What's more uncertain for South Koreans is the idea of unification, which has lost its luster for some over the decades.

She has been demonstrating a very different demeanor than she does in the North, said Korean Peninsula Future Forum analyst Duyeon Kim.

After meeting with South Korea's leader on Saturday, Pence said there is "no daylight" between the nations' views on Pyongyang. If he's not actually forging peace, he's at least putting himself in a position to make a serious assault on the notion. North Korea is likely advancing its own strategic interests by playing into Moon's vision of a peaceful Korean Peninsula.

Analysts say the North's Olympic diplomatic drive seeks to loosen global sanctions against it and undermine the alliance between Seoul and Washington.

The city government's inter-Korean fund was initially established as a disaster relief grant for a train explosion at Ryongchon station, located in the North's North Pyongan Province, in 2004.

Still, North Korea has shown no signs it's willing to discuss denuclearization.

Thousands of spectators, including a squad of more than 200 North Korean cheerleaders, packed the frigid stadium for the opening ceremony.

Moon also faces the risk of a backlash at home. He has taken a cautious approach to the invitation thus far, but the rivals' lightning-quick swing from antagonism to seeming affection could be a chance too tempting to pass up.

Later, Moon watched the joint Korean women's ice hockey team - the first ever combined team at the Olympics - take on Switzerland, joining Kim Yo Jong and Kim Yong Nam, the North's nominal head of state, who is also visiting the South for the Games.

It's hard to find an exact historical comparison to Moon's situation outside of Korea.

A Blue House official said Moon "practically accepted" the invitation. Leaders of the two countries have only met twice since the Korean War. At the last moment, though, they handed off the flame to former Olympic champion figure skater Yuna Kim, arguably South Korea's most famous person. Stopped from becoming a judge because of his student activism, he became a human rights lawyer at a time where that work held real risk. Roh Moo-hyun went in 2007. But it would be Kim's first meeting with a foreign head of state.

CNN's favorable description of Kim, who shares both parents with North Korea's leader and is one of his closest confidants, was in contrast to the remarks by South Koreans the network interviewed. Now Moon, while not lobbying for its return, clearly wants to engage the North.

Korean coach Sarah Murray, a 29-year-old Canadian, used three of the 12 North Korean players assigned to her team for the game - forwards Kim Un Hyang, Jong Su Hyon and Hwang Chung Gum. Seemingly every aspect of her appearance and demeanor has been examined with microscopic detail on TV. Pyongyang has repeatedly said it needs a deterrent to stop the United States attacking it.

Kim Yo Jong shook hands with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, cheered enthusiastically for a unified Korean team, and displayed a sense of humor in weekend meetings.

Moon also urged North Korea to talk to the United States, his office said. Kim Yo-jong is thought to be about 30 years old; like her older brother, she appears to have been educated in Switzerland while a mass starvation, caused by their father's callous policies, killed hundreds of thousands (or perhaps even millions-the true extent is still not known) of her countrymen in the 1990s.
