Koreas unite for Olympics while Washington bangs drums of war

The meeting in the Cheong Wa Dae was held in a "friendly" mood, where the two sides exchanged their views on a wide range of issues, including inter-Korean ties and other matters concerning the Korean Peninsula, according to the spokesperson.

"Make no mistake about it, the United States of America has viable military options to deal with a nuclear threat from North Korea but, that being said, we hope for a better path", he said.

Meanwhile, US Vice President Mike Pence has insisted the United States, South Korea and Japan are in complete agreement over their strategy of isolating the North.

South Korean officials have said Moon was invited to Pyongyang to speak with Kim Jong Un during the talks and lunch that Moon hosted at the presidential Blue House here last Saturday.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has warned South Korean President -in not to fall for 's "smile diplomacy" during, saying the North remains committed to developing nuclear weapons and missiles even while pursuing talks with the South.

The sister of the North Korean leader has arrived in, dressed in a black coat and absorbing a barrage of camera flashes. She also extended an invitation to President Moon to visit her brother in Pyongyang, which potentially sets up the first meeting of Korean leaders since 2007.

They have shared kimchi and soju with Moon, sat in the same box at the Olympics opening ceremony and cheered a unified women's ice hockey team together.

Throughout his visit, observers said Pence seemed uncomfortable with the warm welcome the North Korean delegation received from the South.

Pence spokeswoman Alyssa Farah says Pence visited with guests at several tables at Friday's reception, "but did not come across the North Korean delegation".

"We want to see President Moon become a protagonist in opening a new chapter for reunification and leave great footprints in history", she said.

While the two Koreas are making efforts of reconciliation, the U.S.is pressing the south to distance itself from Pyongyang and join "maximum pressure" foreign policy efforts against the north.

Moon's government is clearly more optimistic than the Trump administration about the potential for the Koreas' cooperation at the Olympics to create the groundwork for more substantial discussions.

The United States has repeatedly pressed China, North Korea's most significant trading partner and main ally, to do more to rein in Pyongyang's nuclear and missile ambitions. In public comments, he repeatedly emphasized the strength of the USA alliance with South Korea and the need for North Korea to give up its nuclear ambitions.

Pence has also spent the days leading up to the Olympics highlighting North Korea's human rights abuses and cross-border military provocations - particularly when he met with North Korean defectors and visited the memorial of Cheonan vessel, which is widely believed to have been torpedoed by the North in 2010.

US Vice President Mike Pence said Washington is open to entering into direct negotiations wth Pyongyang.
