North Korea agreed to attend the Pyeongchang Games after host South Korea and the International Olympic Committee encouraged the reclusive, heavily sanctioned state to participate as a gesture of peace.

Throughout his visit, observers said Pence seemed uncomfortable with the warm welcome the North Korean delegation received from the South.

"Early resumption of dialogue between the US and North Korea is absolutely necessary for developments in inter-Korean relations as well", said Moon, urging the North to more actively engage in dialogue with the USA, who was represented by Vice President Mike Pence at the Games.

Kim Jong-un has invited South Korean President Moon Jae-in to Pyongyang at the "earliest date possible" in a letter delivered during an informal lunch meeting yesterday at the presidential palace in Seoul.

Pence said he was "encouraged" by the meeting.

During his flight back to the US, Pence said: "No pressure comes off until they are actually doing something that the alliance believes represents a meaningful step toward denuclearization".

On his flight to Alaska on Saturday, the vice president said he left Asia "encouraged that we will continue to work very closely to continue and intensify the maximum pressure campaign" against North Korea. "Do you want to make Pyeongchang Olympics a "lie Olympics"?" he asked.

Concerns that the North might hijack the Games to promote its agenda and improve its global image have been a recurring theme in South Korea in the run-up to the Games. "We will see when this is going to happen".

While the Winter Games are just starting to heat up this week, already success has been made for a stretch in world peace with the inclusion of North Korea into the games, proving once again how the power of sports can truly change the world.

Pence spent the days leading up to the games warning that the North was trying to "hijack the message and imagery of the Olympic Games" with its "propaganda".

South Korean President Moon Jae-in's gambit to use the Olympics as a form of diplomacy has produced a dramatic gesture - an invitation from Kim Jong Un to hold talks between the two leaders in North Korea - but it is a long way from a major breakthrough. She also extended an invitation to President Moon to visit her brother in Pyongyang, which potentially sets up the first meeting of Korean leaders since 2007.

North Korean media lauded the players and supporters of the unified Korean women's ice hockey team after their first match at the Olympics - without mentioning their 8-0 drubbing.

The newspaper said that a jet carrying the North's delegation, called Chammae-2, arrived at an airport in Pyongyang around 10.40. p.m., on Sunday. It provides a real fix to the break between Washington and Seoul.

"The South-North relations can not be improved only by the two sides". Moon initially opposed United States plans to deploy a missile shield in South Korea, and a year ago vowed to prevent war at all costs after Trump threatened "fire and fury" against North Korea.

"This is the first time Mike Pence has been accused of being a snob", said an aide to the vice president, who was not authorized to speak publicly on the North Korean reports.

The DPRK delegation met with ROK President Moon four times during the historic three-day visit.
