Officers have arrested a man at the Joy City Mall in Beijing's Xidan district. The nine other victims are expected to recover, police said.

The attacker wounded three men and 10 women, and one of them died because of the stabbing. The man said he attacked people "to express his discontent", police said, adding that the man's surname is Zhu.

China's state-run Xinhua news agency reports that a man attacked shoppers with what appeared to be a knife at the mall on Sunday. Video footage circulated on the Internet showed blood spattered on the floor in part of the mall.

Police detained the man at the scene.

Such attacks are often blamed on people with mental illness or who have personal grievances.

Knives are commonly used because gun controls in China are extremely strict.

But the government has attributed some to militants from the violence-prone far western region of Xinjiang, where Beijing says it faces an Islamist insurgency.

The number of injured persons and their conditions remain unknown, the police said.
