Kim's Sister to Meet Moon After Cheering on Unified Korea Team

A White House official said although Moon did not discuss the invitation with Pence, the South Korean president made it very clear that only when North Korea actually starts to take steps to denuclearise would anyone even consider beginning to take the pressure off. "Where have I seen that before?"

Pictures showed Ms Kim Yo Jong seated between South Korean President Moon Jae In and the North's ceremonial head of state Kim Yong Nam, who was officially leading the North's delegation, and applauding at last night's concert.

Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of Kim Jong Un, "courteously" handed over a personal letter from the North Korean leader to Moon during talks on Saturday and also told Moon of her brother's "intention", KCNA said, without elaborating on what that was.

U.S. President Donald Trump and the North Korean leadership traded insults and threats of nuclear war as tensions rose, with Trump repeatedly dismissing the prospect or value of talks with North Korea.

In response, Pence's press secretary, Alyssa Farah, said only, "The Vice President is grateful that President Moon reaffirmed his strong commitment to the global maximum pressure campaign and for his support for continued sanctions".

It was the first time an inter-Korean team had competed at an Olympic Games.

Moon, in a statement, said athletes from North and South will "work together for victory".

However, South Korea's main opposition party warned that any talks between the two Koreas where the scrapping of North Korea's nuclear programme was not a precondition would only "benefit the enemy".

Pyongyang conducted its largest nuclear test past year and in November tested its most advanced intercontinental ballistic missile that experts said has the range to reach anywhere in the United States.

Earlier, it has suggested that talks could start between the U.S. and North Korea once South Korea suspends its joint military exercise with South Korea.

The 19 other North Korean athletes participating in the games are three cross-country skiers; two short-track speed skaters; a pair of figure skaters; and 12 female hockey players who helped form the Koreas' first-ever joint Olympic team with South Korean players.

On Sunday, however, Mr Pence insisted "there is no daylight" between the U.S. and its ally, Seoul, over how to handle Pyongyang, but his actions in South Korea this weekend tell a very different story. Some burned North Korean flags and photos of Kim Jong Un at the rally. "He & I both reaffirmed our commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".
