The sight of North and South Koreans marching together for the first time in a decade was the culmination of months of work by Seoul.

Vice President Mike Pence's efforts to keep North Korea from stealing the show at the Winter Olympics proved short-lived, drowned out by images of the two Koreas marching and competing as one.

Warmbier, an American college student who visited North Korea in 2015, was imprisoned by the government and accused of attempting to steal a propaganda poster.

The dictator's sister, Kim Yo Jong, and the country's 90-year-old nominal head of state, Kim Yong Nam, were seated a row behind.

But previous meetings between the divided Korea's leaders failed to shut down the North's weapons programs. The vice president also opted not to attend a dinner where he was expected to sit with a member of the North Korean delegation.

The supporters cheered from all four sides of the ice rink as the unified Korean women's ice hockey team were hammered 8-0 by a strong Switzerland side.

A senior administration official said Moon did express to the vice president that he hoped there could be some potential interaction between Pence and the North Korean delegations during the games - something that did not occur.
