Snowboarding: Kim dominant in halfpipe qualifying, Japanese disappoint

A 17-year-old tweeting about ice cream wouldn't normally be considered newsworthy-unless that 17-year-old is American snowboarder Chloe Kim, a rising star at the 2018 PyeongChang Games who felt the urge to tweet about this craving in between qualifying runs in the halfpipe competition.

Now call me insane, but the last thing I'm thinking about if I was at the Olympics is where the nearest Baskin Robbins is.

"By the time I was six I would blow down the mountain and be sitting at the bottom of the lift, waiting for my dad to do all of his dainty turns and come meet me", Kim told Sports Illustrated. "It's kind of a insane coincidence".

The Korean-American world number one stated her gold-medal winning potential with a solid 91.50 in her first run before posting the best score of the day in her second run.

Kim, who loves the beach, music and the mall nearly as much as she does busting out her eye-popping snowboarding tricks, was so good at 13 she might have won gold at the Sochi Olympics.

"I'm always more nervous on qualifiers, so tomorrow, I think I can really focus on what I want to do", Kim said of her qualifying runs.

Chloe Kim, however, calmed her father's nerves with her dominant performance, finishing first in the qualifying round.

"I've just been going insane honestly because I haven't been snowboarding yet and I've just been dying in my room", said Kim, who will be a hot favourite if she executes.

After a recent commercial during the Super Bowl raised her profile further in the United States, a gold medal in Pyeongchang could see Kim cash in with sponsorship mega-deals. "It's really exciting, my whole family is really excited about it, so that gets me even more stoked!"

"There are lots of great athletes in this event", said Liu, who is competing in her third Olympics.
