The spectators included South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the DPRK Supreme People's Assembly, and Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of DPRK's top leader Kim Jong Un.

During the visit, Kim Yo Jong had delivered a letter from her brother asking South Korean President Moon Jae-in to visit Pyongyang at his earliest convenience.

Inside, it had seven more pictures of their meetings with Moon and the opening ceremony in Pyeongchang - four of them featuring the South Korean leader, who was described as president. Moon had said "let's create conditions to make it happen", the official said, an indication that Moon was likely to accept the invitation.

Sputnik: What's your particular point of view on President Moon's statement that an early resumption of dialogue between the United States now on the north is needed for the development of the South- and North Korean relationship? "An early resumption of dialogue between the USA and the North is needed also for the development of the South-North Korean relationship", he said, according to his spokesman.

But a spokesman for the South's presidential Blue House said he arrived late, "exchanged greetings with those seated at the head table, and left without sitting down".

Despite Pence's hardline stance and words, he has also signaled the United States is possibly open to negotiations when he said in regards to the North Korean officials, "I haven't requested any meeting".

Such a meeting, if it came about, would mark the first inter-Korea summit since 2007.

Based on that assurance, Pence was cited as saying he felt confident he could endorse post-Olympic engagement with Pyongyang.

"Working in unity on the way to unification", Kim Yong-nam wrote. United States Vice-President Mike Pence was also present and led the U.S. delegation.

So the North Korean objective is to keep its existing nuclear weapons and then focus on improving its relations with the outside world on that basis.

He also warned that Seoul's ready acceptance of Pyongyang's overtures could damage its alliance with the US.

US Vice-President Mike Pence has said his country and South Korea are in complete agreement on the need to maintain pressure on North Korea. In 2017, Otto Warmbier was returned home, but he was in very poor health.

The ceremony was held at the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium in South Korea's eastern county of PyeongChang.

Any meeting would represent a diplomatic coup for Moon, who swept to power past year on a policy of engaging more with the reclusive North.
