Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, was at the opening ceremony with North Korea's nominal head of state, 90-year-old Kim Yong Nam.

Moon and Kim Yo Jong broke out broad smiles as they shook hands ahead before the start of the opening ceremony at Pyeongchang's Olympic Stadium. North Korea is looking to use the opportunity of the Olympics to soften South Korea's attitude towards its northern neighbour and to find a way to bring South Korea to the negotiation table, thus weakening the US-Japan-South Korea trilateral cooperation which has been pressuring North Korea.
