South Korea's Moon hosts talks with North Korean leader's sister

Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, was at the opening ceremony with North Korea's nominal head of state, 90-year-old Kim Yong Nam.

Moon and Kim Yo Jong broke out broad smiles as they shook hands ahead before the start of the opening ceremony at Pyeongchang's Olympic Stadium. North Korea is looking to use the opportunity of the Olympics to soften South Korea's attitude towards its northern neighbour and to find a way to bring South Korea to the negotiation table, thus weakening the US-Japan-South Korea trilateral cooperation which has been pressuring North Korea.

Alarm at this turn of events may have inspired Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to accept the invitation from President Moon to attend the opening ceremony of the Olympics, despite the current diplomatic spat between the two countries over the historical issues of "comfort women" during the Second World War. South Korea's figure skating superstar and Olympic gold medalist Kim Yuna lit the Olympic cauldron.

The North Koreans went through a busy schedule in South Korea as the world watched their every move.

It is rare for the North's official media to refer to the South's leader as president, usually describing them as chief executive or similar, and even more unusual for a picture of them to be shown.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who sat near Kim Yong Nam at the dinner, had a brief exchange with him and "reiterated his expectation and hope that all parties will use dialogue to achieve the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said.

The two Koreas, which remain technically at war, have cycled through countless periods of chill and thaw since their division 70 years ago.

Accepting North Korea's demand to transport more than 100 members of the art troupe by sea, South Korea treated the Mangyongbong-92 ferry as an exemption to the maritime sanctions it imposed on the North, a controversial move amid concerns that the North is trying to use the Olympics to poke holes in worldwide sanctions. The North and South held summits in Pyongyang in 2000 and 2007, both hosted by Kim Jong Il.

Pence is in South Korea, where he is leading the US delegation to the games' opening ceremonies.

South Korea and the DPRK fielded a joint women's ice hockey team, the first Olympic team between the two Koreas.
