United Nations chief urges dialogue in talks with North Korean official

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is famously reclusive

The North Korean invitation puts Moon in a hard position as he seeks a rapprochement with the north on the one hand and a desire not to upset the USA on the other.

North Korea's 90-year-old ceremonial head of state, Kim Yong Nam, said he shed tears three times during the performance, telling President Moon: "I return with the hope that we will meet again, having created a momentum and opportunity for frequent revisits and exchanged views with the president".

Kim Yu-na, South Korea's former gold medal winning figure skater, wore skates as she lit the Olympic cauldron, after being handed the torch by two members of the joint Korean women's ice hockey team - one from the North and one from the South.

Pence, the leader of the US delegation, was among 12 leaders invited to an in-stadium reception by South Korean President Moon Jae-in. The Koreas could potentially talk about a South Korean special envoy meeting Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang or even a summit between Moon and Kim.

Not long after, North and South Korean athletes entered Olympic Stadium together, waving flags showing a unified Korea - the longtime dream, in theory at least, of many Koreans both North and South.

Pence and Moon took two very different diplomatic approaches to the North Korean delegation's attendance at the games in Pyeongchang.

The exchange with Kim however was the highest-level meeting between the United Nations chief and North Korea.

Moon's office says the North Korean delegates were served traditional food from the Gangwon province, a mountainous coastal area that's home to the Olympic towns of Pyeongchang and Gangneung.

North Korea's reclusive leader Kim Jong-un has asked South Korean President Moon Jae-in to visit Pyongyang at the "earliest date" possible for what will be a third inter-Korean summit, Kim's sister told the South Korean leader on Saturday.

"The 23rd Winter Olympics opened in Phyongchang of south Korea", KCNA wrote in English, using an alternate spelling for the Olympic city and, notably, the lower-case "south" — a style it uses to show it does not endorse the names "South Korea" and "North Korea".

Pence was seated between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

A senior administration official said Moon did express to the vice president that he hoped there could be some potential interaction between Pence and the North Korean delegations during the games - something that did not occur.

After a chaotic year of nuclear war threats and nuclear and missile tests from the North, the opening ceremony proved to be an evening of striking visual moments.

The South Korean president also stressed the need for the communist North to resume its dialogue with the United States.

"Now is not the time to postpone US-South Korea military exercises".

One notable visual came with the appearance of the Russian delegation, which marched in unable to carry its flag because of doping-related sanctions by the International Olympic Committee.
