With extraordinary political theater, Winter Olympics begin (SLIDESHOW)

Two players, one South Korean and the other North Korean, appeared on the opening ceremony and climbed stairs together with the Olympic torch that they handed to Olympic champion figure skater Yuna Kim. Pence's staff insists that the vice president would have met with the North Korean officials if the North Korean officials were interested in meeting.

Moon has been pressing the North to engage with the USA to de-escalate tensions between the countries, which have been fueled by a string of nuclear tests that were met with strong rhetoric from President Donald Trump.

South Korea showed off its technical expertise with a dazzling gala opening ceremony on Friday which included state-of-the-art special effects and augmented reality to add extra impact for TV viewers.

On Saturday, the North's delegation paid a visit to Moon at the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae.

Park also dryly pointed out that the last-minute participation of the North Koreans meant some South Korean athletes who had planned to play were ruled out, a fact some South Koreans continue to resent.

Kim Young-nam, second from left, watches North Korea's Samjiyeon Orchestra's performance in Seoul on February 11, 2018.

His younger sister Kim Yo Jong shook hands with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and gave him a handwritten note inviting him to take part in a summit at "the earliest possible date".

The speed of the Olympics-driven rapprochement across the Demilitarized Zone that has divided North and South since the end of the Korean war has been extraordinary. North Korea withdrew from the Nonproliferation Treaty in 2003, stepped into the inter-Korea borders a number of times, declared itself a nuclear nation in 2005, and conducted its first nuclear test in 2006.

"Unlike the United States, we do not engage in dirty and messy acts to abuse sports events like the Olympics for political purposes", the newspaper said in an article attributed to an unnamed writer.

Though Moon has used the Olympics to resurrect meaningful communication with North Korea after an extended period of animosity and a diplomatic stalemate over its nuclear program, he did not immediately jump on the North Korean offer for a summit.

The sister of North Korea's Kim Jong Un shared a historic handshake with the South Korean president as the Winter Olympics got under way. So the North Korean objective is to keep its existing nuclear weapons and then focus on improving its relations with the outside world on that basis.

US President Donald Trump has been engaged in a long-running war of words with Kim Jong Un, sparking fears the rhetorical battle could spill over into a live conflict.

Mr. Trump, who has at times exchanged taunts and threats with Mr. Kim, said in early January after the first intra-Korean talks in over two years that the United States was willing to speak to North Korea "under the right circumstances", although it was far from clear whether this would pay dividends.

"I feel incredibly honored to be here in Korea competing for the USA and I'm so proud to be representing the LGBTQ community alongside this fantastic guy!"

The file was an indication that Kim Jong-un was sending a message not as chairman of the Workers' Party but using his newest title as chairman of the Commission on State Affairs.

The vice president's visit was also marked by bad blood between Pence and some USA athletes.

Ms Kim, who is though to be about 30 years old, was promoted to the powerful politburo last year.

Later in the day, Moon and the North's delegation also jointly attended the opening match of the unified women's ice hockey team comprising athletes from the two Koreas.

As the Week noted, the International Olympics Committee has formally banned Russian Federation from participation in the games but allowed 169 athletes to compete under a neutral flag.
