Former Trump campaign manager charged for paying former European politicians

Gates served as the campaign's deputy chairman and is a close associate of Paul Manafort, the former chairman and a subject of intense scrutiny in the Russian Federation investigation.

The latest charges against Manafort and Gates' plea came a day after a new indictment against the pair included additional charges of tax evasion and bank fraud.

Gates' guilty plea place more pressure on Manafort, who led the Trump campaign from June 2016 to August 2016, to cooperate with the collusion investigation.

Papadopoulos, a former Trump campaign aide whom the White House has described as a low-level volunteer, became a major figure in Mueller's probe when he pleaded guilty on October 30 to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Mr Mueller, who is leading the probe into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign, made the allegation in a court filing which brought new charges against Paul Manafort, Mr Trump's 2016 campaign chairman.

Gates and Manafort were charged with a dozen counts of fraud, conspiracy and money laundering in October, and they pleaded not guilty to those charges.

"In 2012 and 2013, Manafort used at least four offshore accounts to wire more than 2 million euros to pay the group of former politicians", the indictment alleges.

After Manafort's firing, Gates continued working with the campaign, and assisted Trump's team in the transition after he won the election.

Flynn was sacked by Trump in February 2017 after it emerged he had misled top White House officials about his interactions with Russia's ambassador to the United States.

A person familiar with the negotiated plea said Gates can expect "a substantial reduction in his sentence" if he fully cooperates with the special counsel's investigation.

Paul Manafort leaves Federal District Court in Washington, Monday, Oct. 30, 2017.

Since then, Ukrainian prosecutors investigating the protests have said Yanukovych ordered security forces to open fire on protesters, and some are looking into whether Manafort had a hand in encouraging Yanukovych.

Manafort served as Trump's campaign manager from March 2016 until August 2016, when he was sacked after revelations about the extent of his work with the Party of the Regions.

Gates' plea poses the biggest immediate risk to Manafort, who was also the former's longtime business partner.

Van der Zwaan was also accused of lying to investigators about why he did not provide Mueller's office with a September 2016 email between him and another person referred to in the charge as "Person A".

This follows a political counteroffensive by Trump and congressional Republicans in recent weeks, including the release of a memo drafted by staffers for the Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Devin Nunes, documenting the fact that the Federal Bureau of Investigation illegally obtained a warrant from the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to wiretap a former Trump campaign aide, Carter Page, by failing to inform the court that information it used to secure the warrant was paid for by the Democratic Party and the Hillary Clinton election campaign. In court filings over the past few months, Gates gradually began to show the strain the case was placing on him and his family.
