Oshkosh woman charged with murder of babies in 1980s

Prosecutors say Moronez told a Milwaukee police detective this week she was responsible for the three deaths and said at one point that she "can't take kids that constantly cry".

The station reported that Moronez was the mother of the youngest victim and the babysitter of the other two victims.

Nancy Moronez, 60, of Wisconsin, has been charged with drowning and suffocating three babies more than three decades ago.

After contacting the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office, police learned Moronez was also connected to the deaths of the other infants, and she was arrested by Franklin and Milwaukee police Tuesday.

She faces up to 20 years in prison on each murder count.

Four years after her son's death, Moronez was hired to babysit a 6-month-old boy.

She said she began to worry when the baby's face turned purple like her son's had.

In 1984, a six-month-old died in her Milwaukee home.

During the same interview, investigators say Moronez admitted to becoming "frustrated" in 1984 with a six-month-old boy she was babysitting so she smothered him.

According to police investigators, the first time that Moronez was mentioned as a suspect in these crimes was in 2015.

That prompted police to reopen investigations into all three deaths. The next crime nearly ended with Moronez being questioned by investigators, for one of the responding firefighters at the scene recognized Moronez from the 1984 case.

The following year, she babysat an 11-week-old girl whose death was attributed to SIDS. "Later in the interview, the defendant stated, 'I made a promise, but I broke it.'" The complaint indicates Moronez "stated that she knew she did wrong, that she is sorry".

'Do you remember me?' the firefighter said Moronez asked him.

Moronez told investigators "that when her daughter was born she made a promise to God that should would not do anything to her daughter to hurt her if she was crying". She added that she "held him down and felt him wriggle a little under the water", charging documents show.

'Yeah, I remember, ' he said.

Moronez confessed to using a blanket to suffocate the baby as she "kind of moved around her hands".

She did not suffocate him, she said.

Moronez is now being held on $35,000 bail.
